King Charles honors mother Queen Elizabeth II's legacy on 1st anniversary of her death

One year after Queen Elizabeth II died, members of the royal family are paying tribute to the late monarch.
Her eldest son, King Charles III, marked the occasion with an official statement from Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
"In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty's death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us," the king said. "I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all."
The king was officially crowned on May 6, marking the first new monarch the United Kingdom had seen in more than 70 years. Queen Elizabeth II — who died "peacefully" at Balmoral Castle at age 96 on Sept. 8, 2022 — was Britain's longest-reigning monarch, having become queen at the age of 25 in 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI.

Prince Harry says his grandmother is 'looking down on all of us tonight'
Prince Harry, who lives in California with Meghan Markle and their two children, returned to England to attend an awards ceremony for the charity WellChild, of which he is a patron.
The Duke of Sussex, Queen Elizabeth II's grandson, made a speech at the event Thursday after meeting some of the children with serious illnesses who use the organization's services.
"As you know, I was unable to attend the awards last year as my grandmother passed away," he told the crowd.
"As you also probably know, she would have been the first person to insist that I still come to be with you all instead of going to her," he said. "And that's precisely why I know exactly one year on that she is looking down on all of us tonight, happy we're together continuing to spotlight such an incredible community."
Last year, Prince Harry canceled his appearance at the awards ceremony in London to travel to Balmoral Castle and be with his family after his grandmother was placed under medical supervision.
